Law & Ethics

Having been both a content creator and an editor, I have had to keep laws and ethics very present in all that I do. Here are a few examples of how I have kept true to these principles during my time on The Muse.

Blurry Motif -- The Silent Epidemic

One thing you can never control as an artist is how your art is remembered.

When designing the spread for this story about the loneliness epidemic our generation is facing, I wanted to make sure no students were singled out as the face of loneliness. That is why I worked with the photographers to make sure all the faces were obscured with long exposure and blurring effects. To have these elements flow more seamlessly in the spread instead of being called-out, I also blurred the subheads of text.

Editing -- We Will Remember Your Ignorance

As the editor for this spread, I worked very closely with the designer to ensure this layout matched the serious tone of the article. Since the subject matter was so delicate, we wanted to make sure the composition was simple, yet bold, to let the main focus be the text of this editorial.

We Do NOT Promote Drugs On The Muse!! -- Up in Smoke

For this story about the realities of student drug use our photographers got photos with actual vapes and nicotine products. As great as the photos were, we obviously aren't trying to sell these products.

Consequently, I made sure we included a resources and hotlines box on this spread in case any readers found themselves struggling with substance abuse problems.

Photo Attributions -- Off Beat Obsessions

No, we weren't able to get a photoshoot with Ms. Taylor Swift. Devastating, I know.

For this spread, all of the photos were sourced from Wikimedia Commons to ensure we had the legal right to publish these images.

Commitment to Diversity

At my school, diversity isn't just seen through the typical demographics of gender, race, ethnicity, or religion. We also have to consider the art areas of students, because as a school magazine we have to be the voice for everyone.

As a designer, editor, and now an ME I have always made sure that the work on our publication amplifies as many voices as possible.

For instance, when I've made illustrations or edited graphics from staffers, I make sure we show a variety of characters that aren't limited in terms of representation.
